Developing Committee Goals and Objectives

  1. DENTIFICATION OF PURPOSE

    A. Is the general description of the committee's purpose clearly stated so that it will be easily understood by others?

    B. Do you feel comfortable with the description of your committee's expected program responsibilities? Are the expectations realistic?

    C. Without altering the intent or basic content of the description, can we determine a succinct, clearly stated statement of purpose?

  2. SETTING GOALS

    A. ROUTINE GOALS

    • What are some of the traditional responsibilities of the committee that you would like to see continued?

    • Would you recommend any changes in the basic content or format of the ongoing program, or would you continue the program as is?

    B. PROBLEM-SOLVING GOALS

    • Based on your knowledge of the committee, what improvements would you like to affect in terms of the organization of the committee, program content, program format, etc.?

    • Assuming you have identified some of the problem areas of the committee, what seem to be the solutions to correct these difficulties?

    • If the same problems reappear or new ones develop during your term as chair, what measures or steps should be taken to correct them at that point?

    C. CREATIVE GOALS
    • What special and/or new ideas do you bring with you in your in your new role as chair that you would like to see implemented?

    • How will you provide for new ideas to be contributed during your term by yourself and members of your committee?

    D. DEVELOPMENTAL GOALS

    • What experiences would you like your committee members to gain in their position?

    • How will you ensure that these experiences will be realized for your committee members?

    • Why do you think students will want to join your committee? What do you think their motives will be?

    • How will you provide for both social intermingling and task accomplishment as committee chair? Are the two concepts self-exclusive or compatible?

    • How would you assess your strengths and weaknesses in working with a group of people? In what areas do you think that you will need help?

  3. DETERMINING OBJECTIVES

    A. What are some of the basic steps in accomplishing the stated goals?

    B. Is the objective specific, clearly stated and understood and related to a time frame whenever possible?

    C. Have all of the possible objectives been considered?

    D. Do the objectives seem realistic and within the scope of the committee?

  4. IMPLEMENTATION OF GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

    A. TASK ASSIGNMENT

    • What are the specific jobs that need to be done in order to fulfill the objectives?

    • Who will take responsibility for the separate tasks?

    • When will each task be completed?

    B. BUDGETING

    • How much will each item cost, and what is the total cost of producing the program?

    • After figuring the costs per event, what is the total budget required for the committee for the term?

    C. EVALUATION

    • Did the committee fulfill its stated goals and objectives? If not, what seem to have been the difficulties and what changes in the stated plans could be made so that the goals will be met? If so, is the committee able to report a successful completion of its aims and directions for the term?

    • Have the committee members been commended on jobs successfully completed?
